چکیده

Everyone agrees that conversations take place in a context. This is not to merely point out that conversations occur at a time and a place, or that there are particular speakers and hearers, though this is all of course true. Conversations take place against a background of mutually recognized facts: facts about the beliefs and presumptions of the participants, facts about the information conveyed thus far, facts about what’s under discussion, and so on. Although there is some disagreement as to the exact nature of conversational contexts, it is generally agreed that they record these sorts of facts. As Stalnaker (1978) and Lewis (1979) first pointed out, the context both affects and is affected by the utterances in a conversation. Consider a conversation in which I ask (1) and another one in which I ask (2):

An Experimental Investigation of the Semantics and Pragmatics of Specificity

There are many different theories of specificity in the semantic literature. These include specificity as scope (Ioup 1977, among others), specificity as referentiality (Fodor and Sag 1982), specificity as a choice function reading (Reinhart 1997, Winter 1997, Kratzer 1998, among many others), and specificity as speaker identifiability (Groenendijk & Stokhof 1980). Importantly, theories of spec...

Specificity and Referential Persistence – An Experimental Study of Indefinites in German

Indefinite noun phrases introduce new discourse referents equipped with different referential and discourse properties. Indefinites can show wide or narrow scope behavior and they can be interpreted as specific or non-specific. Indefinites also show different discourse effects such as different degrees of discourse prominence. In this paper we present the results of two psycholinguistic pilot s...

Specific indefinite noun phrases are prototypically referential expressions, show wide scope, are presuppositional, and indicate discourse prominence or “noteworthiness”. However, not all specific indefinites show these properties. The existence of so-called “narrow scope specific” or “relative specific” indefinites demonstrates that specificity cannot be explained by the wide scope of specific...

Folk Ideas About Reference and Specific Indefinites

Informal discourse about specific indefinites often employs ideas such as ‘the individual the speaker had in mind’. Although this kind of discourse most often seems to proceed coherently, many semanticists are sceptical about theoretical or formal accounts employing these notions. In this paper, we argue that folk ideas about reference are central to semantics, figuring in the truth conditions ...

Topic-strategies and the internal structure of nominal arguments in Greek and Italian∗

The paper investigates investigates how Italian and Greek employ Clitic Left Dislocation (clld) to encode discourse topics. Greek is sensitive to the definiteness/referentiality of the topic, employing clld exclusively for referential topics and resorting to Topicalisation for non-referential/property denoting topics. By contrast, clld is the main topic-strategy in Italian including non-referen...
